At Digital Next, you’ll often find us talking about the importance of having a mobile friendly website for your business. Well, it has just become even more important, as Google has just announced that from 21st April 2015 it will increase the rankings of mobile friendly websites.

As technology continues to advance, more and more people are moving away from laptops and desktop computers and browsing the internet on smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices instead. Having a mobile friendly website means that your customers will get the same great experience, regardless of what device they are using to view your site.

In an announcement on the Google Webmaster blog, it was stated that Google would be introducing two major changes to the algorithm it uses for ranking mobile websites. Not only will the updated algorithm label your website as being mobile friendly, it will also use that label to decide if your site should appear higher in its results pages.

The aim of this change is so “users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimised for their devices”. Google went on to say that this change will have a “significant impact” on all mobile searches in all languages online.

If you think that this update may negatively affect your website’s rankings, don’t worry! Google are waiting until 21st April to implement these changes in order to give everyone a chance to prepare and make sure their websites are mobile friendly.
